A More Nutritious Staple to Address Stunting

How We Work in Indonesia

Three pathways HPS Indonesia uses to scale nutrition through farmers — from seed, to market, to plate.

What This Is

HPS is working with research institutions, seed partners, and government partners to build a sustainable seed system for NutriZinc. By strengthening seed multiplication and distribution, HPS is accelerating the rollout of Indonesia’s first zinc-enriched rice and laying the foundation for a reliable domestic seed supply at national scale.

What It Looks Like in Indonesia

More than 5 million people are consuming nutritious, biofortified foods. In North Sumatra, over 2,500 farmers and 1,000 women are gaining the knowledge, skills, and support needed to adopt sustainable, nutrition-sensitive agriculture.

What This Is

Connecting zinc rice farmers with millers, aggregators, and markets while supporting processing, branding, and market development to make nutritious, biofortified foods more accessible and attractive to consumers.

What It Looks Like in Indonesia

More farmers and value chain actors are gaining the knowledge, skills, and support needed to adopt sustainable, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, and improved soil health.

What This Is

Building on years of evidence generation and advocacy, HPS works with government partners and key stakeholders to create an enabling environment for improved nutrition. Through technical support, HPS is strengthening government leadership and commitment to advance nutrition policies and scale implementation.

What It Looks Like in Indonesia

The Government of Indonesia continues to strengthen nutrition and food security through supportive policies and investments. It has supported 750,000 farmers to cultivate zinc rice on 250,000 hectares and initiated the development of a national standard for biofortified rice through the Ministry of Agriculture’s Board of Agricultural Standardization and Modernization. These efforts are laying the foundation for the large-scale adoption of zinc-enriched rice across the country.
