Nutrition Built Into Malawi's Staples

How We Work in Malawi

Three simple ways HPS Malawi expands access to nutrition, from seed to market to plate

What This Is

We work alongside research institutions, seed producers, and local partners to grow and supply quality seeds for iron beans, orange sweet potato, and vitamin A maize. This strengthens seed systems so farmers can reliably access nutrient-rich varieties every planting season.

What It Looks Like in Malawi

Over 9.5 million people, nearly 46 percent of the population, now eat nutritious iron beans. Production of iron bean seeds reached over 2,100 metric tons in 2025, marking a 20 percent increase from the previous year.

What This Is

We partner with local businesses to build sustainable markets for climate-smart, biofortified foods. By connecting farmers with buyers, processors, and retailers, we help create reliable market opportunities for growing nutritious crops.

What It Looks Like in Malawi

HarvestPlus Solutions Malawi supports market connections for iron beans, vitamin A maize, and orange sweet potato. This approach helps transition these crops from initial introduction to self-sustaining commercial markets, ensuring nutritious food stays accessible for the long term.

What This Is

Our Home-Grown Nutritious School Meals program links child nutrition, education, and local economy support. By purchasing crops directly from local farmers, we supply schools with wholesome food while offering farmers a steady income. School gardens and community education further extend these benefits beyond the classroom.

What It Looks Like in Malawi

The initiative currently reaches nearly 460,000 students across 900 schools, highlighting how biofortified foods support child health and classroom success.
