Scaling Agricultural Innovations by Building Commercial Markets

How We Work in Kenya

Three pathways HPS Kenya uses to support the farmers, cooperatives, processors, and food businesses in scaling nutrition innovations across the country.

What This Is

Through investment in Early Generation Seed, improved seed production and distribution, market development, farmer and consumer awareness, we increase access to nutritious crops and foods, creating lasting improvements in diets, livelihoods, and food systems resilience.

What It Looks Like in Kenya

More than 10 million people—approximately 18% of Kenya’s population—are now consuming iron beans. Just a few years after the release of the Nyota variety, iron beans account for 13% of the country’s annual bean production, equivalent to more than 86,000 metric tons (MT) of grain.

What This Is

Building supply chains that connect Kenyan farmers to commercial buyers and provide solutions for the bottlenecks in the food system — piloting micro-warehousing models to solve aggregation, and supporting product formulation for minimally processed foods that use nutrient-enriched crops as an ingredient. This is what turns a harvest into a business.

What it looks like in Kenya

Linking iron beans cooperatives in Western Kenya to aggregators and processors who buy at fair, reliable prices. Supporting SMEs producing blended flour, porridge mixes and food products with Kenyan biofortified crops as ingredients. The result: 1.3 million Kenyan farmers grow nutrient-enriched crops today — because the market makes it worth their while.

What This Is

HPS plays a catalytic role using its Markets, Meals, and Mindsets model — working from seed to plate. That means supporting seed and grain supply, farmer production and aggregation, school procurement, and the policy environment that lets schools buy nutritious, locally grown food.

What it looks like in Kenya

The Home-Grown School Feeding Program remained a powerful driver of impact. Nearly 366,000 learners received nutritious meals containing biofortified foods, while over 130,000 farmers benefited from reliable markets through supplying schools.
