Celebrating Nutri Day in Indonesia: Turning Local Resources into Nutritious Meals

Oct. 22, 2025

On August 28, 2025, the district of Banyu Asin in South Sumatra, Indonesia, came alive, as women farmers, nutrition champions, and local leaders gathered to celebrate Nutri Day — a day dedicated to showcasing how creativity, local wisdom, and agricultural innovation can transform ordinary ingredients into extraordinary nutrition.

Organized through a collaboration between HarvestPlus Solutions, the Faculty of Agriculture of Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI), and the Banyu Asin District Government, the event was a reminder that healthy, balanced meals can be created using what communities already have at hand, even on a limited budget.

The celebration featured a Mini Expo of biofortified crops, nutritious local food products, and innovations in sustainable agriculture; a lively Cooking Competition where women’s groups turned low-cost, locally sourced ingredients into healthy dishes; and an Interactive Nutrition Quiz that reinforced lessons from the Nutrition Smart Agriculture (NSA) training program.

Among the most exciting moments of the day was the Cooking Competition, which brought together five women’s groups from five different villages. Each team was challenged to prepare a wholesome family meal with a budget of no more than IDR 60,000 (less than four US dollars).

Despite the modest budget, the results were extraordinary. Participants relied on what was readily available: vegetables and fruits from their home gardens, free-range chickens raised in their backyards, and fish caught from nearby irrigation canals. With imagination and skill, they demonstrated that nutritious meals can be both affordable and delicious.

“We didn’t buy anything fancy,” shared Titik Suryani from Telang Sari village. “Most of the vegetables came from our garden, and my husband helped catch the fish from the small canal near our rice field. It feels good to serve healthy food that we grow and catch ourselves.”

Each group presented their dishes to a panel of judges, explaining not only how they prepared their meals but also how they ensure their families maintain healthy diets daily. The presentations revealed not just culinary creativity, but also a strong grasp of nutrition, hygiene, and household food management.

“The creativity of these women is remarkable,” said Dr. Nura Malahayati, lecturer at UNSRI and one of the judges. “They proved that healthy eating doesn’t have to be expensive — it’s about understanding how to combine ingredients wisely to achieve balanced nutrition.”

For many participants, the day was not only about cooking but also about empowerment. The knowledge gained from the NSA training has equipped them with practical tools to improve household nutrition despite limited income.

“Before, we thought good nutrition meant expensive food,” said Suparti from Banyu Urip village. “Now, I know it’s about making the most of what we already have — planning meals that give my children the energy and vitamins they need.”

As the scent of home-cooked meals filled the air, laughter and learning blended into one uplifting experience. The event went beyond competition — it was a celebration of women’s resilience, leadership, and innovation in improving family nutrition and community well-being.
Through events like Nutri Day, women farmers in Indonesia are not just growing crops — they are cultivating healthier futures for their families and communities, proving that with creativity, knowledge, and local resources, nutritious living is within everyone’s reach.
