Addressing Hidden Hunger in Uganda

How We Work in Uganda

Three pathways HPS Uganda uses to scale nutrition through farmers — from seed, to market, to plate.

What This Is

Working with research institutions and local seed producers and seed companies to multiply and disseminate iron bean, orange sweet potato, and vitamin A maize planting material. Building seed systems that enable farmers to plant nutrient-rich varieties reliably each season.

What It Looks Like in Uganda

Commercialization of seed continues to expand, with more than 1,300 metric tons of certified iron bean seed and 133 metric tons of certified vitamin A maize seed sold during the year through direct sales,  This year HPS partnered with Action Against Hunger (ACF), Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and Caritas (Hoima) to reach 12,000 refugee households with biofortified seed.  It is also supporting the establishment of multiplication gardens to enable sustainable access of the biofortified seed in refugee and host communities.

What This Is

We help partners develop strategic agricultural value chains to ensure a sustainable and profitable supply of biofortified foods — connecting farmers to aggregators, processors, and markets that reward a more nutritious harvest.

What It Looks Like in Uganda

HPS has supported over 30 aggregators, millers and food processors to integrate biofortified crops into their product lines and over 80 schools to incorporate biofortified food in their school meals.
As a result of HPS Uganda’s consistent evidence led advocacy, biofortified crops have been included in the Maternal, Adolescent Infant and Young children Nutrition Guidelines and National School Menu Guidelines, which is expected to further boost demand as schools integrate these nutritious foods into their diets.

What This Is

We help raise awareness of the benefits of biofortified foods, building consumer demand, and engaging women — who are central to both growing and preparing food — in the production and consumption of nutrient-rich crops.

What It Looks Like in Uganda

We trained women and youth groups in growing, processing, and marketing biofortified crops, supported more than 900 voluntary female Lead Mothers to promote better nutrition in their communities, and helped women farmers build income from iron beans and vitamin A-rich crops

What This Is

We work with governments and key stakeholders to create an enabling environment for improved nutrition. We engage policymakers and partners to integrate biofortified crops into policies, plans, guidelines, and nutrition and agriculture programs.

What It Looks Like in Uganda

Our evidence-led advocacy has helped integrate biofortified crops into Uganda’s MIYCAN Guidelines, the School MENU Guidelines under development, and humanitarian programs serving refugees and vulnerable communities in northern and western Uganda and the Karamoja region. HPS supports the National Bureau of Standards’ technical working group to develop standards for biofortified crops and products, enabling greater integration into programs and regional trade. Through sustained advocacy, six NGOs and 10 private-sector partners are also scaling biofortified seeds, crops, and products across the country.
