The World is Precariously Dependent on Just a Handful of Staple Food Crops – We Must Diversify

The war in Ukraine has highlighted global food insecurity due to the world’s heavy reliance on a few staple crops like wheat, maize, and rice, with shortages causing hunger for 735 million people. Malnutrition, particularly micronutrient deficiencies, has worsened. To counter this, experts propose diversifying food systems by promoting underutilized, nutritious crops such as millet, and quinoa, and biofortified varieties like orange-fleshed sweet potato, as well as incorporating aquatic foods like fish and seaweed.
